    THE ROLE OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS IN PROMOTING GENDER POLICY IMPLEMENTATION IN NAIROBI COUNTY. A CASE STUDY OF USIKIMYE ORGANIZATION IN KAYOLE SOWETO

    Women’s empowerment and gender equality are essential pillars in shaping national and global development priorities and policymaking. Despite the presence of progressive gender policies and legal frameworks in Kenya, gender disparities and rights violations continue to affect women in informal settlements. These challenges are more pronounced in urban informal settlements, where access to formal accountability mechanisms is often weak, and implementation of gender-related policies is limited. While the government has committed to reducing gender inequalities, the translation of gender policies into tangible change at the grassroots level remains inconsistent and under-researched. Grassroots women’s movements and other civil organizations play a vital role in turning gender policies into practical community action. This study is founded on the intersection of gender policy implementation and the role of Women’s Rights Organizations in promoting community-level accountability and change, specifically within the context of urban informal settlements in Kenya. This study seeks to examine the role of Usikimye, a grassroots women-led organization based in Kayole, Nairobi County, in promoting the implementation of gender policies within its area of operation. The research aims to explore how the organization translates policy into community-level action, the strategies it uses to raise awareness and foster accountability, and the challenges it encounters in this process. This study will employ a qualitative case study design, relying on data collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. It will target Usikimye staff, women beneficiaries, and relevant local stakeholders. The results from this study will advance existing literature on gender policy implementation by civil society actors and offer practical insights for policy makers, development partners, and grassroots organizations working in similar contexts. Gender mainstreaming has become central to national development discourse, policy-making, and global development goals.
