Item A RESEARCH PROPOSAL SUBMITTED TO THE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE AWARD OF THE DIPLOMA OF LEADERSHIP AND MANAGMENT OF THE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY OF AFRICA(MUA, 2020-02) OWII ANYANGO JACKLINEThe purpose of this study was to find out the factors affecting inventory management in the hotel industry in Kenya: a case study of Silver Springs Hotel Nairobi. The study focused on four key objectives which included; effects of employee training, information technology, cost and internal control system on the inventory management in the hotel industry. The research utilized primary data. The source of data primarily adopted in order to create a room for high reliability of data acquired and also reduce the gap that may exist as a result of technological advancements leading to changes in the economies of scale. The primary data involved use of questionnaires and interviews (personal interviewing) to fill the gaps left. The target population used were employees working at the Silver Springs Hotel in Nairobi estimating about 100 employees. The respondents were drawn from the Top Department, Middle Department and the Support Staff Department since the inventory management efficiency was an issue that affects the entire organization. The sample size obtained was 40. The simple stratified sampling was used since the study involved several departments. Respondents from each stratum were selected using simple random sampling. Purposive sampling was also used to select managers who are directly involved in procurement of goods, works or services. The data analysis and processing utilized frequency tables which were generated to highlight the percentage scores and cumulative percentages for the variables of interest. For quantitative data, tabulated findings, calculated frequencies and percentages on each variable under study was used and then interpreted to make research findings. The information was then presented in form of table frequencies and percentages, pie charts, use of tables to present data. Quantitatively the response of 56% indicated that employee training affects inventory management while 44% indicated that it does not affect. 78% indicated that information technology affect inventory management while 22% indicated that it does not affect inventory control system management. According to the study, 78% of the total respondents indicated that cost affects inventory management while 22% stated that it does not affect. Based on the study, 67% indicated that internal control system affects inventory management while 33% on the other hand stated that internal control system does not affect inventory management. The results from the study have clearly indicated that provision of employee training, information technology, cost and internal control system would go a long way in enhancing business performance. It is recommended that organizations should continuously endeavor to use technology so as to undercut competition; hotels with lower costs can set lower prices that result in greater sales and profits and finally the management needs to understand that security is hygiene factor; when it’s there and inefficient, people hardly notice it at all.Item INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION ON PERFORMANCE OFLAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN KENYA: A CASE STUDY OF NORTHEASTERN AREA OF NAIROBI COUNTY(Management University of Africa, 2021-03) OBWOGI OKARI ALFAYOThe quality of law enforcement is a concern for every citizen because it affects all whether directly or indirectly. The main problem covered in this research study stems from security reforms done by the government that have not resulted in improved performance, but criminal activities have rather increased. The underlying challenges causing below-average performance have not been fully studied thus hindering the roles played by security officers. The study aimed to understand the relationship between motivation as an explanatory variable and performance as the dependent variable. The study purposed on finding out the impact's motivation has on the security sector by focusing on the County of Nairobi. Law enforcement in Kenya is primarily offered by the National Police Service organization. The rampart increase of crime against persons in Northeastern area in Nairobi is the problem to be investigated on how transactional leadership will help to carp the crimes. The mixed design used for this research encompassed exploratory, descriptive, as well as qualitative elements where the regular police were employed in the sampling frame. Information gathering from respondents was done by a questionnaire. Data analysis focused on performance of police officers and how it was attributed to motivation. The target population include police officers in charge of Northeastern area of Nairobi County, Sub-counties, police stations, police posts, police patrol Bases and the Government Administration representative at informal settlements. Questionnaires were subjected to a sample size of 184 respondents using purposive sampling techniques from selected police officers and Government administrators. The quantitative and qualitative data collected was analyzed by use of SPSS (the Scientific Package for Social Sciences) and Microsoft spreadsheet. The result indicates that, insecurity occurs because of increased unemployment rates, illicit brew, drug abuse and trading. working harmoniously with the police service. From the findings, measures put in place by the Government of Kenya to provide security to the citizens are good, but luck the aspect of proper policies and follow up procedures to motivate the primary law enforcers. The recommendation of the study is that the government of Kenya together with involved stakeholders should provide enough motivation to the police in order to enhance them performance and the delivery of services.Item THE EFFECTS OF E-MARKETING ON CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR IN SUPERMARKETS: A CASE STUDY OF NAIVAS SUPERMARKETS OF NAIROBI(Management University of Africa, 2020-11) GRACE JOAN MACHARIAMarketing activities in Kenya has been revolutionized by the changes of information technology and the widespread use of social media and other e-marketing platforms. Many retailers have had to adapt to engage in non-traditional marketing activities that include eMarketing. The use of e-marketing that include social media, digital advertising and e-marketing has gained ground significantly in Kenya and as a result many retail outlets and brands are adapting to the new changes and consumers preferences. Supermarkets are one of the retail outlets that are slowly taking up this change. This research aimed to find out the influence of e-marketing on consumer buyer behavior in Naivas supermarkets in Nairobi County. The study adopted descriptive cross-sectional study. The study utilized population of all Naivas supermarkets in Nairobi County. The research depended on data from primary sources that was gathered through the use of structured questionnaires. The study found out that social media, online marketing and email marketing positively influenced consumer buyer behavior. The study concludes that inquiries were received via social media about new and existing product. Promotions done via social media led to increased sales in Naivas supermarkets. Naivas Supermarkets had many site visits once a product has been launched. Online marketing attracted more customer and customers perceived online marketing as convenient mode of transaction. Use of email helped in customer retention and customer provided feedback on the email sent. The study recommends that policy makers in Naivas supermarkets ought to formulate strategies on better adoption of E-marketing. The policy makers ought to enhance the better usage of social media to market their products. Administrators ought to train their staffs on E-marketing mode of transactions. The administrators ought to ensure that their supermarkets launch new products by sue of social medias. Naivas Supermarkets ought to use e-marketing for easy awareness creation of products and services offered. Naivas Supermarkets ought to embrace e-marketing to save on cost and to create awareness of products via E-marketing platforms.Item FACTORS WHICH AFFECT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AMONG WOMEN IN WESTERN KENYA: A CASE STUDY IN KERICHO COUNTY(Management University of Africa, 2021-09) MOHAMED ABDINOOR DAHIRThis study seeks to throw more light on the effects of socio-cultural factors in the management of sexually related and gender-based violence (SGBV) against women in Kericho County, Kenya. The following objectives are used to guide this study: (i) Establishment on how domestic violence affects women and families in the region. (ii) Explanation on the cultural norms used to manage Sexual and Gender Based Violence. (iii) Examination on how the Government is involved in assisting domestic violence victims in the region. (iv) Identification of the necessary corrective measures being taken to stop and ensure that violence does not recur. The study includes questionnaires, one-on-one interviews and a case study used to conduct the research. The target population for this study is the people living in Kericho County, facing domestic based violence. The study settled on census sampling to carry out the research. The selected size sample for this study was one hundred and fifty respondents. In this study, the data obtained was done by applying descriptive statistical tools and SPSS software. The results accumulated were expressed in a format involving percentages and statistical methods. The obtained information in the work, gathered from the view of many professionals, is important to the Government of Kenya (Gok) in the implementation of planning programs. Based on the survey results, the researcher came to a conclusion that the rehabilitation programs, resulted to moderate impacts on violence against female community. Victims of domestic based violence was financially supported and empowered, and plans were made to provide temporary shelters for the victims. However, interviewees said that not all the services provided were free. Most of the victims said that they were charged some fee in order to get such services, which resulted in most of them not participating. Educational interventions, such as raising awareness, social gatherings and media, educated the victims more about domestic violence. Members of the society stigmatized victims of gender-based violence and this made them feel uncomfortable. Group interventions, such as couple counseling and the management of short temper and anger, were found to offer solutions on the short-term, while on the other hand free legal advice helped victims exit abusive marriages much faster. Services available for survivors of domestic violence 4 were a challenge. This was because there are not many attorneys' providing free legal advice which limited the number of victims assisted.Item FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO STUDENTS POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN DAY HIGH SCHOOLS IN NAIROBI: (A CASE STUDY OF MAKINI HIGH SCHOOL)(MUA, 2019-09) OGOMBO DOROTHYPerformance of students is a product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors. It was interesting to note that several studies made on factors that influence academic performance in public schools; socio-economic factors such as parents’ net income, wealth & education background, lack of adequate teaching material, equipment and other environmental factors like location of schools. On the other hand, in private schools, the cost of education is high; the schools are fully equipped and have up-to date teaching materials hence parents are committed to meet these high costs hoping that this is enough to ensure that high performance, sadly not the result. The purpose of the study was to examine the factors contributing to poor student academic performance in Day High Schools. Objectives selected; to find out the influence of on Student Attitude, Motivation, Home environment and Life skill on academic performance of students in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations. The study used Makini High School, a mixed day-secondary school, because of its easy access and the presences of both male and female gender of the population all form four students. Descriptive survey research design was used to explore factors influencing student academic performance. The data was collected from questionnaire administered to students and quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics such as means, frequency counts and percentages. The findings on attitude and motivation slightly above half mark could imply that students could be impacted from the home environment – lack of adequate parental support and close monitoring as well as week life skills. Life skills training of student as per of the educational curriculum is recommended.Item THE IMPACT OF HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE.A CASE STUDY OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH (MOH) IN NAIROBI COUNTY(MUA, 2021-09) HALIMA ISMAILThe primary goal of this project was to see how planning human resource methods affected the performance of organizations. The study's specifically determined how the impact of job analysis on Ministry of Health performance, the impact of staff demand and supply forecasting on Ministry of Health performance, and the impact of employee retention planning on Ministry of Health performance. The respondents' data was collected using descriptive methodology research. The study's target population was 100 workers from the Ministry of Health In Nairobi County. The sample size of thirty workers, or thirty percent of the target population, was chosen using stratified random selection methods. Questionnaires were utilized to gather information. The information gathered was evaluated using average weighted and percentages, which were then displayed in frequency charts and tables. According to the findings, the business uses job analysis questionnaires regularly. Job analysis at the workplace improves the company's competitive edge. Internal promotion is the most important element examined by the business in employee supply forecasting, whereas demand for products and services is the most important factor considered by the Ministry of Health in employee demand forecasting. Employee demand forecasting assists the business in addressing current and future people requirements. The main factor of a successful staff retention strategy in the business is an attractive pay package. The company's retention strategy is heavily influenced by support for personal and professional growth. The company's competitive edge is boosted through retention strategy. The researcher concluded that staff retention planning, demand-supply forecasting, and job analysis all have an impact on the success of a company. Companies should have well methods to operationalize them and well-documented human resource strategies, according to the recommendations. To gain their commitment and support, senior management must be educated about the potential effect of human resource planning .Organizations should establish career development standards and require each employee to create expressive discrete answerability plans that evidently outline their ambitions and professional goals in accordance with the rules.Item FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UPTAKE OF HEALTH INSURANCE AMONG KENYAN LOW INCOME CLASS IN KENYA: A SURVEY STUDY OF KOROGOCHO SLUMS RESIDENTS, NAIROBI(MUA, 2019-09) GRACE NJERI KAGIRIHealth insurance has been considered as key to achieving universal health care by various countries. This is with the aim of ensuring that every citizen should have access to needed healthcare services that are effective and of acceptable quality and that no one should risk financial ruins as a result of illness. However, recent statistics still indicate that in Kenya, currently 26.6% of total health expenditure is out of pocket. Out-of-pocket spending on healthcare has been found to drive the poor into more poverty and poses a barrier to their access to healthcare. This study aimed at determining factors influencing the uptake of health insurance among Kenyan low income class in Kenya: a survey study of Korogocho slums residents, Nairobi. The objectives of the study were to determine the extent of uptake of health insurance among Kenyan low income class in Kenya in Korogocho slums resident in Nairobi County, to determine the factors influencing uptake of health insurance, the preferred type of health insurance scheme between private and public health insurance and the level of satisfaction for those already having health insurance cover. The independent variables in this study were socioeconomic factors, the available health insurance providers, the preferred health insurance provider and client’s satisfaction. The dependent variable for the study was uptake of health insurance which was determined by the extent of health insurance uptake. The study was carried out in Korogocho slums in Nairobi County. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample size was (n=384) which was determined through the formula n = Z2p(1-p)/d2. Respondents were sampled through stratified random sampling method where eight hospitals formed the stratum. Data was collected by use of self and researcher administered questionnaires by the researcher for a period of two weeks. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 to draw both descriptive and inferential statistics. Uptake of health insurance was found to be 46.1% majority of them being those employed in the formal sector, and also majority being covered by NHIF. Level of knowledge on health insurance was found to be 52.6%, which could be a major factor contributing to low uptake.Item GAMBLING ADDICTION AS A DISEASE AMONG THE YOUTH: A CASE STUDY OF KITENGELA TOWNSHIPS, KAJIADO COUNTY(MUA, 2021-09) FRANCIS PEREGambling among youth is a growing public health concern. Similar to adults, research reveals that gambling among the youth can lead to adverse outcomes such as strained relationships, delinquency and criminal behaviour, depression and even suicide. The broad objective of the study was to investigate gambling addiction as a disease among the youth, with a special focus to Kitengela Townships, Kajiado County. Specifically, the study outlined the social factors, explore the cultural factors, investigate the motivation of gambling behaviours and investigate how education affects gambling behaviours among the youth at Kitengela Townships, Kajiado County. The study employed a descriptive research design and targeted the unemployed youth aged between 18 -35 years both male and female from to Kitengela Townships, Kajiado County. The primary data was collected using structured questionnaires in this study. Data coding, entry, and modification are all part of the data analysis process. The research used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, each requiring its own set of procedures. For quantitative data cleansing, coding was used to identify mistakes, omissions, and inconsistencies, which will be followed by a data entry procedure using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) (SPSS version 24.0). The study found out that Slightly over half of the respondents (54%) who participated in the study were female, majority of the respondents (63.1%) were aged between 20- 25 years and majority (87%) of the respondents indicated that they had ever placed a bet. On gambling addiction as a disease among the youth at Kitengela Townships, Kajiado County, 56.9% and 35.4% of the respondent indicated that culture influenced their betting behaviour; society supported betting (55.4%); bet because they were sports. The study revealed that gambling among youth was high. The major motivation for gambling was monetary gain. Many youths wanted to strike it rich without working hard for the riches. This could be due to distorted cognitions especially perceived from their significant others, peers as well as the promotional advertisements in the media. Prevention strategies should be developed to deal with gambling problems. Primary interventions would be targeted towards prevention of development of gambling problems. Secondary interventions should target those that are at risk, or who display probable gambling problems. Tertiary interventions would deal with those who are already addicted and need treatment. Gambling promotional adverts in the media should be banned completely. Banning these adverts would reduce some of the influences and acceptability that is generally evident in the public. Alternatively, gambling advertising should be restricted by ethical laws similar to what happens with tobacco and alcohol. That means alongside the adverts, realistic information should be provided on the consequences of gambling on one’s health and wellbeing.Item EFFECT OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE AT UNGA GROUP LIMITED IN NAIROBI COUNTY(MUA, 2021-10) DERRICK CHOMBA WACHIRAThe objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of different leadership styles on the performance of employees at UNGA Group Kenya. The study employed survey descriptive design. The target population was 323 employees of UNGA Group Limited in Nairobi County. The study used simple random sampling to select 155 employees to participate in the survey. The study relied on primary data. Data collection was performed through the use of structured questionnaires. The study also indicated that the existing type of leadership in selected UNGA Group affected the employee’s performance both positively and negatively. Finally, the study found that there are various measures that can be used to address the negative effects caused by the existing type of leadership. Among of the suggested measures includes; leaders should be flexible to change their styles, ensure collaboration with the employees, leaders should use participatory methods of leadership and that leaders should win subordinates.Item FACTORS AFFECTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN LEARNING INSTITUTION IN KENYA: A CASE STUDY OF CHRISTIAN INDUSTRIAL TRAINING INSTITUTE(MUA, 2019-07) DOROTHY W NJIRUThe purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the implementation of quality improvement in learning institution in Kenya with reference to Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute. This study was to be guided by the objectives which are: management commitment, financial resources, internal auditing and organizational culture. The significance of the study was to the management of Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute, Government, and other manufactures and future researchers. The study adopted descriptive research design. The target population for this study was 109 employees which involved a sample size of 44 respondents. Data to be collected through questionnaire that was to be distributed to the respondents and to be analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods and later presented through tables, bar graphs and pie charts.
